Respite care is about providing a service to an individual and supporting them with day to day tasks such as cooking, cleaning, shopping list, attending appointments, socialising within the community, or even assisting with activities in their own home.
Respite is normally arranged to ensure an individual is able to get jobs done around the house or simply to help a loved one. Respite can be used for lots of reasons. A family member could be the main carer and just need a few hours away, to have a break.
A lot of the time Respite care can be for a day, a few days or up to a week depending on the necessity of the individual. Respite is put in place to take the pressure off from the main carer(s) and allow them an opportunity to know that their loved one is in safe hands.

I believe respite care is so important and a service that can be so over looked. It isn’t shameful to ask for help and there isn’t anything wrong with saying you need a break. Caring for a loved one is exhausting, tough, emotionally draining and mentally draining. Caring for a loved one takes over your entire world, your plans change and life is never the same again.
And as hard as it is for the person you care for they learn to accept their life has changed. However you have to learn to adapt to how much your life has changed overnight as such. There’s a lot of anger for both parties most of the time and many unanswered questions. People need to know respite care is put In place to allow assistance, to allow time and to know it to help you and avoid burnt out. It’s really important to me as I have seen so many families go through this and the heart ache it brings, but also the frustration that’s caused and a feeling of not being able to have a break.
I want to make a difference in everything I can offer and If I can change just one person’s life I know I’ve done my job.
